Ann Ledy has a long and distinguished career as an artist in New York City. But In the fall of 2022, Ledy was introduced to Cape Ann as a Manship Artist in Residence. There she studied the Cape’s coastal topography of rocky headlands, sandy beaches and rolling hills and found it a breathtaking contrast to NYC’s urban scape. Within a year, she had purchased a home in Lanesville, moving her studio full-time to Gloucester. This was the beginning of a new chapter in the artist’s studio practice.

Her daily vision embraced clouds, horizon, extreme terrain and the sea. The impact was profound and changed her choice of medium, palette and lens. The new landscape has become embedded in her work and marks a dramatic shift in her process and production.

After a career as a post-minimalist avoiding color and creating in a geometric visual language, Ledy’s work now reflects the new world she is inhabiting; it is spirited and playful. In the artist’s words: ‘I have come from the plains and the grids of Manhattan and am now riding the waves.’

Ann Ledy holds a BFA in Painting from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN and an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. She has appeared in numerous solo and two-person exhibitions across the United States as well as in Korea and Germany; and has been included in a long list of group exhibitions, nationally and internationally.  Ledy’s work is in the permanent collections of many prestigious institutions, among them: Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN; Yale University Art Museum, New Haven, CT; Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA; Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, NH to name a few.  The artist maintains a studio on Cape Ann in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
