Audrey Goldstein | Turning Spells

August 9 - 28 . 2025

Opening Reception with live performance Saturday August 9 . 2-4pm @ the SHED 18 Arlington Street . Gloucester MA

Ephemeral Bodies, my current series of sculptures, float, disconnected from the earth and yet are drawn upon by gravity. The works occupy space between gravitational forces and our dreams that live in the clouds.

These works explore how strength is forged from vulnerabilities, just as a pearl is formed out of irritation and wrongness. The work examines how the practice of empathy, of seeing each other in oneself, can transform our core to open spaces within ourselves. The work investigates these internal openings as a contrast to our experience of being solid and fixed.

I choose materials that carry meaning, from shattered glass stitched into silk to flattened house forms- darkened and warped, to shredded utilitarian rope stitched together to form a delicate lace. Wood is held together by thread, while soft wool felt becomes building structures. Areas are formed out of older works, disassembled and reordered. Meaning shifts as materials entangle and unfurl within the work.

Dimensional drawing, moving through forms and surrounding hollows, structures these works as they travel between delicate, airborne, embroideries to become muscular shapes that evolve into architectural structures. They form an ouroboros, a loop of infinity and renewal, a type of circulatory system of becoming and undoing.  — Audrey Goldstein  . June 2025
